I believe as long as you brace the top you do not need to add 2x4's to the sides. the water pressure isn't that much. how thick of plywood are you gonna use?

Planning 3/4" exterior grade ala Garf.org. Then using either extra plywood or 1x2's or 2x4's for the bracing.

Noto- I really like the pothos! I may use some of that for a plant that will trail down over the side of the tank, and then a peace lily for some vertical growth and the nice flowers.

And this tank will be in a room with 6' french doors that face west, so the plants should get more than enough late afternoon and evening sun. This is also the reason I'm not planning a front window on the tank, as it would get too much sun and be very algae prone.

I'm now thinking about using Sani-Tred's PermaFlex instead of a 20 mil rubber pond liner. It'll be a lot easier to use, and since this build will only require about a half gallon, I'll have almost half of it left over after coating this tank.

Plus, the plumbing will be a LOT easier through this coating than through a rubber pond liner...

I'm thinking about putting in a window now. Won't be the full length, as I want a full sheet of plywood support under the filter box, but it will be about 20" tall by 56-58" long. Shouldn't be too expensive for a 3/8" thick piece of glass, right?

Priced the plywood, screws, and PermaFlex, and came up with this:

3/4" plywood: 3 x $30.98 = $92.94
2 lbs 2" screws = ~$15.00
1 gallon PermaFlex = $100.05 (+shipping)

so far = $207.99 + shipping on Permaflex.

Then I need the pump (about $100), plumbing ($~20), scrubbies (~$30), and eggcrate (~$10). Lights will probably be 2 x 2 bulb, 4 foot shop lights from HD (~$40).

So not counting shipping on PermaFlex, total cost should come out to about $410. Shipping and taxes will add to that, but I'll basically be getting a 270g tank for $500 or less, without a window.

I'll check window pricing today, to see if that will be doable or not. I will also want to build a stand for it eventually as well, but that's just some 2x4's, screws, and plywood.

A 3/8" 58"x20" window will cost me $106.80. Not too bad really. I may have to splurge and go for a front window on this tank. Which makes it a tank, not a "pond" I guess, right? :D
