I just finished doing a few days research on putting a 16' x 20' indoor Amazoninan Biotope garden/pond in my new home to be built next year. It was a cool design it's very expensive to maintain. It's the energy cost that'll kill you. The heat isn't bad (go natural gas). The water circulation [pump] not too bad. Lighting: it was going to be built in the solarium. Controlling humidity; crap that's the problem. Humidity control for an open top indoor pond is going to run you some serious money. If you can DIY, install ductwork, elec etc. and all than the actually cost of materials isn't that bad. Still the energy cost to keep things going. Yikes
I decided to go another route and am looking into a 12' x 8' x 30" (covered) insulated concrete tank with viewing glass. The depth allows for easy access to plants and livestock.

Yeah, that's the problem with any of these big tropical projects. Stick with the natives! There's so much to choose from and they're every bit as interesting as the South Americans.

Then you end up with no fish. =P

THE WAY TO DO IT IS TO CHANGE THE WORD SOLARIUM TO GREEN HOUSE......., PLANTS LOVE HUMIDITY....., PLUS TO MAKE IT A MORE BALANCED AND FUNTIONING SPACE ITS A GOOD IDEA TO KEEP IT HUMID......, REMINDS ME OF THE BOTANICAL GARDENS IN AMSTERDAM. THEY HAD ONE HUGE SOLARIUM....., WITH A HUGE POND / WATER FEATURE. WAS REALLY COOL. AS FAR IT BEING A LIVING SPACE THAT WOULD ALMOST NOT BE EVEN WORTH IT....., NOT WORTH TRYING TO MAKE THE SPACE SOMETHING IT DOESNT WANT TO BE....., THATS WHERE THE REAL COST IS......, FIGHTING IT....., JUST GO WITH IT......... -MY DREAM SOME DAY-
