Inducing Convict to Breed

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah I know. Weird question. Hoe can I induce male Convicts to man up and breed? I have three that are very wimpy, being consantly chased by the single female in the tank. The female is a bit larger, the three range from being like 4-5cm whilst the female is 6cm. But yeah, the female is just chasing all three around. How do I get the males to grow some balls? XD

Coz I don't think they'll be growing bigger than her anytime soon. I am searching for some larger male Convicts, but kinda hard for whatever reason.

If your larger female is constantly chasing them, she may be preventing them from getting enough food to grow to potential.
She may also find them to to be too wimpy at this point, to meet her standards.
Separate the males from the female, so they have a chance to feed and grow, and after they have, reintroduce them to her tank.
I had a tank of 4 bifasciata females who prevented a male from growing.
I temporarily gave the male its own tank, and doubled his water changes. He quickly grew larger than the others and became father of many spawns soon after.

I agree with Duane to let the males get some size on them and reintroduce to the female.

I have also had good luck with heavy feeding, especially with live foods, then follow up with a large waterchange with cooler water to induce spawns.

Try to put 1 male to a few females. That will be better odds.

I have two females to one male flowerhorn. The female is 3.5 inches and the other is 2 inches but a bonsai. The male is 7 inches. So far hes hurting the bigger female but I just added them to a tank today out of my community tank.

I went to my LFS today and they had this huge 4 inch convict for sale and a female at 3 inches. I was tempted to by the male since he had a small hump but I didn't because he might hook up with my smaller flowerhorns.

Be sure to maintain at least 78F.....
We're talking about convicts, world's easiest fish to breed. I just had my fifth spawn and I don't even use any heater.

Females tends to breeds with a male that is bigger than herself. But they're right, just add water and they will breed.
