Done the same thing many times.:duh:

Here are pics of the three species commonly referred to as Green Terrors:
1. Gold Saum
2. Silver Saum
3. Rivulatus 'True Green Terror'

Damn mine has a little bit of everything from what I see.

any help in sexing green terrors? theres some really good looking ones at a Petco near my house (i know, its petco). i want a male

the males have more traily fin tips (dorsal and anal) and nicer coloration. Sometimes they have a nuchal hump too.

Wow. I had typed a response that was 3 paragraphs long, then I mistakenly hit the back button. Damn it. It was good too, it had a lot background info on how the true green terror just recently became available again. :irked: Blast it all. I guess it is all for the best as my post was a bit off topic anyway. It is still sad though.

If you are interested in knowing why the true green just showed back up in the hobby around 5 years ago, shoot me a pm.

If you want basic husbandry information then you should find what you are looking for by searching the forum..

But since I would be annoyed if I asked a question on a fish forum; only to be directed to the search function...

Here is some basic info.

They are south American fish which occur in both Peru and Colombia. In the wild they live in relatively fast flowing streams, but you shouldn't worry about trying to duplicate that environment in the home aquarium if you get properly acclimated fish. Males will hit 11" females should reach 8". You could easily spawn a fully grown pair in a 75 gallon tank as long as they are well bonded. IME they are on the lower part of the scale when it comes to aggression, I consider them to be in the class of jack Dempseys in terms of aggression and physical capability.

i hate it when that happens

I wanna know why they show up. please repost it.

Do you know who Don Conkel is? Well he is a big time cichlid whole seller who sells cichlids all over the world; he provides a good deal of the cichlids to fish stores around America. Years ago he put a lot more time into the small side of the hobby, but in the last 5 or 6 years his reputation has taken a hit with many private hobbyists due to some dubious dealings. Anyways some years back when I still did business with him, he told me that the true green terror occurred in fast flowing rivers in Peru that were dangerously close to the Colombian border. In the late eighties due to the massive growth of drug cartels in the area, and due to fact that both the cartels and groups like FARC were kidnapping both Americans and Peruvians from the area, it became nearly impossible to collect the real thing. Conkel’s account seems to be correct, I have spoken to quite a few hobbyists who have been collecting fish for decades and they all told me the same story. I met a guy through the ACA who swore to me that he had collected true green terrors back in 2000 but all the fish died when he was held up in customs in Mexico. His story seems believable; I imagine that an American with several dozen boxes of fish would draw the attention of customs. According to conkel when it became clear that the true green terror would no longer be available, wholesalers simply replaced it with similar looking acaras (which we know as the suams) the suams grew larger and were less aggressive than the genuine article, so apparently whole sellers liked them even more than the real thing. The true green terror was out of the hobby for over 25 years. They were the rarest fish around.

Then about four or five years back, Jeff Rapps was able to secure a source for some and they have been available ever since. Frankly speaking I have no earthly idea how rapps was able to do it, conkels has places in setup in latin American and he was not able to secure a source for them. But it’s a good thing for the hobby for the hobby that they are back.

personally, I kinda prefer the gold saum over either the silver saum or the "true" GT . . . but it's great that more fish are becoming available . . .

I think it's amusing that the fish most often referred to as "green terror" is now considered the "false" green terror, while the "true" green terror apparently deserves that common name more, despite it's rarity.

It's more of a first come, first serve kind of thing.
