So I researched them and saw they got large and need to be in groups, therefore need a big tank.

But atm I have no tank and I hear these fish are good, and fun starters. Since they grow uber slowly, would it be ok to get 4-5 of them in a 25-30 gallon? And how long would they be able to stay in it before an upgrade was needed?

I would honestly look into a 75 gallon for a group of 4-5 for a couple years. They are slow growers but they still grow. Better to upgrade later as opposed to sooner.

unfortunately 75 is out of the question. My parents wont let me get one that big. The biggest I could get is probably 40, or maybe 50 if it was pretty cheap.

Try to get a 55 gallon. They're fairly cheap tanks and also, look into PetSmart's big fish sale that goes until July 27th. They have clown loaches for a great price. I paid approx. $4 each for the 3 I recently purchased.

Dude me too! Got mine for half price. Although, back in the day when I could get CL's for $2 a piece...

I need to know, where are these cheap 55 gals?
I dont have a lot of money so these tanks that cost like 300+ are epxensive to me.

From what my wife and I have clown loaches need a mature tank with good clean water. They are however a great fish to watch as they nose around the tank. they grow fastest the first year or so we started with 3 of them in our 150 and had no trouble adding new ones good luck.

Try Craigs List or ebay for a cheap, used tank. Also, try your local newspaper's classified section.

You should be able to a 55 fully set up used for around 150 check the internet classifies.

would getting 2 clowns and 2 tiger barbs be an alternative to a big tank? They will school and need less space since the tigers wont get big.
