If you're not able to upgrade now or down the road, then you might want to start looking at smaller species.

I agree with two loaches. With two loaches they will dance together, twirl and caress one another.
I have three large clown loaches and two yoyo loaches in a 55gal tank. the two yoyo dance and twirl together. the three clowns seem to hug and at times apear to court.
Two loaches in a 30gal tank should be fine.

No clown loaches for anything less than 75g. Look into the smaller species such as Botia kubotai.
