Info on Bowfin

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have caught many along weed edges. Try fishing under a bobber and on bottom. Some days they are picky about presentation. I always try and find a spot where they comming to the surface to breathe, its the best way to know if you are in the right area.

when you see a bowfin you'll know it, sometimes they are mistaken for eel's.. they're also known as dogfish, if you're plannin on catching one, you'd better bring a net.

my friend john caught one one time w/ a spoon i think, but the bowfin was just sitting in one spot next to the dock and he kept putting the spoon right in front of it's face, and it finally took it, kind of an odd fish to catch

Whats the deal? I have been fishing all my life and have yet to catch a bowfin! I fish everything from small farm ponds to the Ohio River to the Gulf of Mexico! Where is my bowfin?!?!

It's not hard to find them here in AL. Locally they are known as grendle. They can be found in abundance in low lying swampy areas ( a place where the ability to gulp air would come in handy) and emergent weed beds. Live bates usually work well, try cryfish if you can get your hands on some.

Very important info here if you have never caught one before please dont try to grab it by its lip like you would a bass or other fish. You will be missing skin and possibly flesh if you do. Google search bowfin skull, its kinda hard to see the teeth with the mouth closed or open sometimes but not hard at all to feel them if you stick a finger in their mouth.
