Any one have any pictures? I think ill up to this once i see how the red belly's do.
How are they in a school?
What size range to they max out at?
What temperament do they have? 1-10, 1 being RPB 10 being piraya or irritans.

thanks for the help.

Scapularis is no longer a valid name and this species is now known as S. striolatus (Second Link). It's not uncommon for this species to also get misidentified as other fish like S. serrulatus (Third link) or as something of the pristobrycon genus (Fourth link)

If you got a Pristobrycon maculipinnis mis identified as a striolatus you are one lucky sob as P macs go sell for around 300$ though i have never heard of a P. mac. selling for anything but a P. mac. as it's a species that is farily easy to identify. Another cool thing is you can sex P. macs.

I probably wouldn't keep them together. They are not an overly agressive species like say a rhom may be but but they are fin nippers. I have seen a couple shoals before so it is possible but it won't always work out.

I am not overly sure on their max size though I would estimate they would max out around 7"

From what I've read these guys have been reclassed a few times from serrasalmo to pygocentus to serrasalmus to most currently Pristobrycon Scapularis in 2007. Closely ressembles the Eigenmanni - theres extremely little info on these guys as they seem to be mis-identified often and visa versa.

jp, have you ever seen that guy in their store? Anyone even remember the last time aquascape had them in stock? it's not like they update that site every often

i love how all most info on them appears to be coming from one source, opefe.com

Thanks for all the links guys. looks like a very difficult species to get ahold of

I don't record G, Pedro or Alex had it in stock, at least not when I went to their stores.

jp, eddie, sean, and eh... other one?... I really appreciate the information. It looks like these guys are going to be hard to come by. It seems to me if I want an aggressive one to look at the blue diamond, irritanis, or the piraha.

Once settled with these RPB's i will most likely shoot up to the blue diamond. but that'll probably be in a year.

I had a disaster with my first batch of RPB's. They seemed fine for a couple of days but i went to work one night and my wife called me frantically saying the one that did not have an eye was dead (she thinks) and its seems it is stuck on the powerhead. She said the others were fine but he was dead. I came home in about 2 hours and all were dead.
I tested my water, checked the temperature.... I went in to the LFS and they said that was the best water quality that they have ever seen. They said it was probably a bad batch of piranhas. I bought 4 more @ about 2inches and a common pleco that was prob. 2.5in. I am now feeding live goldfish.

They seem happy, but a little calmer (they dont dart around the tank that much, even when i tap the glass or stick the net in.) Its a little weird, i stuck my hand in the tank and they slowly started to come towards my hand.... needless to say i removed it. LOL.

Luckily the do not pick on the pleco... I keep 2-3 live goldfish in at a time, i keep a close eye on the tank, so when they strip the goldfish i remove it. Does this sound okay?

Thanks again, guys, your help means a lot. These are by far the greatest animal i have kept in my house.
