Info the "Scapularis" Piranha.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's not nessassary to feed Piranha feeders of any kinda, they readily accept a wide variety of of other foods. Please read the Piranha nutrition thread. Hope you do upgrade soon.

jp, eddie, sean, and eh... other one?... I really appreciate the information. It looks like these guys are going to be hard to come by. It seems to me if I want an aggressive one to look at the blue diamond, irritanis, or the piraha.

Luckily the do not pick on the pleco... I keep 2-3 live goldfish in at a time, i keep a close eye on the tank, so when they strip the goldfish i remove it. Does this sound okay?
.

Irritans will probably be even harder to find and cost alot mroe then scapularis. Any rhom will probably somewhat agressive, even something liek a sanchezi but with p's there is alot of hit and miss.

If you lost a bunch of p's and your water seemed fine is there a chance that your water became contaminated with something (cleaned with chemicals around it....)?

For the pleco id probably remove it. They produce a ton of waste and eventually it will probably be killed. A couple years ago now my sanchezi 4" at the time took the eye out of a 8" pleco so just becasue they can't consume the entire pleco does not mean they can constantly nip it and harass it.

Otherone, i did read the nutrition thread and other miscl. websites. Some do clash on what to feed them, but for this month i belive i will feed them goldfish just because i can take notes on when they want to eat, so when i feed them they will be satisfied to eat. I figured that like most animals, piranha's will pick at what intervals and times they feel comfortable to eat, and to make them most comfortable i should feed them when they want.
But i do thank you for your advise.

Sean, thank you as well. I understand that now, while they arent doing so well, and they are getting used to the 56gallon vise the 20gal. they may not have any interest in the plecostomus. And later they may not agree with him being present. However, i have monitored their actions toward him and i will continue to monitor. I plan to upgrade again to a 150+ gallon tank for the rpb's and leave the pleco in the 56.

I am prepared if they show any intrest. I will move him temporarily to the 20gal until i move. I do not plan to move with a 150 gallon tank. Thats to much money to accidentally break in a U-haul over 1k miles.

They do not have ANY chemicals around them other than what is for them. I wish it could of been contamination, then i can blame myself for inproper handling. but i believe that i have been a jack... and got ripped off. I have owned many other fish without so much as a slight issue with them. Then again i have never bought from this fish store before, he is the only one within 100miles that i know of that sells Piranha's.

I assumed because he owns almost every species of piranha that he knows what he is doing, but i went to his shop again and took notes on what his fish look like and not only are 25% of them mislabled but over half of them are sick or sickly looking.
Its sad, he has a beautiful Rhom, Irritanis, and piraya stacked one over the other (that are so aggressive they will try to jump out of the tank and snap when you walk by) and they all have cloudy eyes.

If your hell bent on feeding them "feeders" I'd strongly suggest Rosie Reds over Goldfish, however a $5 bag of silverslides (frozen) is by far a better food source. Cloudy eye is generally caused by stress. Stress can occur from numerous situations, poor water quality is not always the cause.
Cold Temps, Harassing Tankmates, Poor Diet, Claustrophobia, Shipping,Transporting, Improper Acclimation, Genetics, and New Enviorments can all lead to excessive stress leaving them wide open to the possiblity of disease or bacterial infection.

i don't get it, if you read the piranha nutrition section you would've picked up on the potential harmful side effects and switched to a different type of feeders?

Also, piranhas don't always "pick at" live food, alot of times they'll kill just to kill and it has nothing to do with hunger. just ask anyone who's had another piranha taken down by the shoal on a day they were feed.

I purchased a 5" Serasalmus Scapularis from the same site (Aquascape online) about 9 months ago. Mine has none of the coloration that the one in their picture has, but it does have the pronounced bump on the forehead.

I have it as a solo fish in a 55 gal tank that is heavily planted in one corner, and lightly planted through the rest of the tank to allow feeding room. He simply does not leave his corner...

I've been feeding mostly live guppies (working on a better diet for him) and they have free reign of the tank until the lights go out at night. He is very much a night feeder. The only fish I've seen him take with ANY ambient light in the room are the ones that swim directly in front of him. The next morning however, POOF! they're all gone.

He does keep an eye on me as well, almost as if he doesn't trust me and always wants to keep me in sight. If I move to block his view with a plant or something, he'll creep forward until he gets an un-obstructed view. Just his eye though, the rest of him stays hidden.

I got this species for something unusual and seldom seen. He is just that... seldom seen. If I were to buy piranha in the future, I would probably go back to red bellies or caribes to get a little more action in the tank. If his color starts coming in a little better, he may grow on me as a specimen fish, but as of now I'm a bit disappointed overall.

I don't believe any fish are compatible, as I've lost 2 x plecos (4-5") already and do not intend on trying any more. Seems very territorial, but only in darkness.

As far as Aquascape Online, the service was good, and the fish was well packaged in tupperware inside the bag of water, and then insulated inside the box. I e-mailed to verify availability, and Kathy was fast with her response times. No complaints with the company itself.

Good luck and I hope this helps if even just a bit. Any suggestions on how to bring it out of the corner or color it up are welcomed!

diggindirt, that's often the problem when you're dedicating an entire tank for one fish that's not very active. i don't have to be in your situation to feel your pain, it sucks

Once settled with these RPB's i will most likely shoot up to the blue diamond. but that'll probably be in a year.

I had a disaster with my first batch of RPB's. They seemed fine for a couple of days but i went to work one night and my wife called me frantically saying the one that did not have an eye was dead (she thinks) and its seems it is stuck on the powerhead. She said the others were fine but he was dead. I came home in about 2 hours and all were dead.
I tested my water, checked the temperature.... I went in to the LFS and they said that was the best water quality that they have ever seen. They said it was probably a bad batch of piranhas. I bought 4 more @ about 2inches and a common pleco that was prob. 2.5in. I am now feeding live goldfish.

They seem happy, but a little calmer (they dont dart around the tank that much, even when i tap the glass or stick the net in.) Its a little weird, i stuck my hand in the tank and they slowly started to come towards my hand.... needless to say i removed it. LOL.

Luckily the do not pick on the pleco... I keep 2-3 live goldfish in at a time, i keep a close eye on the tank, so when they strip the goldfish i remove it. Does this sound okay?

Thanks again, guys, your help means a lot. These are by far the greatest animal i have kept in my house.

goldfish shouldn't be used in the diet at all. They have thiamanese which can be detrimental to your piranhas health. It is best to go with carnivore pellets along with smelt or tilapia as a staple. If you have to have live food go with guppies or other livebearers as they do not have thiamanese.
