I might be able to build a pond in our backyard. (Emphasis on might. I still live with my parents but its a possibility.) Anyways, I was thinking about building basically a wooden box, using treated lumber. I would like to make the box like 5 feet deep or so. Then I would like to bury the box so there is 1 or 2 feet still above ground. The inside of the box will be lined with a pool liner, or one of those roofing liners like I read about in another post.

So, does anyone think this will or will not work? Any coments or suggestions are welcome. It will be a while until this project gets started, as I have several other things I have to do first, but I would like to figure everything else out in advance.

yeah sounds like it will work.

That will work fine.

Get's kinda cold in your part of the world tho.

If your going to over-winter fish in it you have to go below the frost line and consider a pond heater and aeration (both cheap and will be a big benefit to you and the pond).

Filter the way you have it is easier since you don't have any bulheads and it's gravity return.

What do you want to stock in it?

way not just make a wooden collar then let the ground support the liner below the surface

The original plan was to build this pond and stock it with natives, but plans have changed. I have a decent size preformed pond (around 200 gal) and pumpwhich I will be putting in the back yard. I plan on planting it and putting some sunfish in it.

I like your plan of this pond. Sounds good. What you could also do is (Just a thought) line the edge with a 1" or so of cement then put the wood in, then add pond liner. This could act as extra insulation or something. And also stop the treated wood from getting white ants or rotting. Because my treated posts for my veggie garden starting rotting after 7 months.
