Injured 2 foot Silver Arowana

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Apparently she freaked out again last night... and now seems to have cracked part of the bony plate on her head... she has always been a really calm fish, this makes no sense...
also, we that one of the fish is excreting clear (its stuck to the filter intake).. so we medicated the tank with prazipro..

Looks as if it has dislodged a scale, not a big deal. It will fall off and a new will grow back. Your tank is becoming more cramped everyday and having the other aro in there things will only get worse. You do need to provide a night light, if your silver can see the other fish it will not be as jumpy at night.

OUch thats a Nasty injury there... My RTG just jumped again and bruised its nose and a week before he/she jumped and bruised the top of it's head where there's a big white spot now. They do this all the time it seems. But its weird that your Silver aro suddenly changed personalities and is acting weird like that. Do you have the Marineland Emperor filter? I asked around and everyone says the marineland is a weak filter so i use it as backup now along with my AquaClear 110 filter. I've asked a few of my LFS before and they all say that aro's normally dont jump if water quality and temp is good (82F). Whenever someone walks by my tank my aro still jumps and gets nervous cause I guess it's still getting use to the new environment since I just bought my RTG like 3 weeks ago. But my rtg still eats, swims actively and gets excited when I reach for the mealworm box. Perhaps test the waters? I use to have the Marineland filter on its own and the filter really didn't do the best job then i added the aquaclear110 and tested the water in the tank again after a weeks time for ammonia etc. The water was still almost nearly perfect from my last water change (i have only my RTG in my 75g). So if you just have your marineland filter with no other backup filter maybe test the waters for Ammonia, PH etc. and see if thats the problem with all the jumps/mood swings. Good Luck!

we do have a marineland emperor filter as well as a whisper.. but our main filter is an eheim pro 3...... a few months ago we even bubble wrapped the support bars in the top of the tank to prevent stuff like this from happening.. good advice about the water conditions the temp is 81 F, but we'll test the water later today..

it definitely isn't a loose scale, its part of the bony plating that's part of her head.. that's why we're worried, she's dropped scales and grown them back before... we will eventually get them a 300 gallon tank, but since the jardini is small they all have plenty of space and aren't in each other's face...

thanks for the advice about the moonlight.. we have one it just isn't on.. we'll try that tonight...

with the head plate injury, should we just leave it or should we try and secure it down? i would think that would just upset her more though...

It's a scale, compare it to the other side. Yours is not the first to loose this scale, it will grow back just like any other scale does.

Scales will heal in no time. Don't bother with meds and just keep up with the wc's. I had a nasty chunk missing out of the fat on it's dropped eye and it's face all scraped up on one of my Aros before assuming something bit it and u can see the excess fat oozing out from it and it took 1.5 weeks to fully heal. So I wouldn't worry about a loss scale as Aros can take a beating and still survive fine.
