Injured Bichir (what to do)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Gonna come out swinging like that huh? If I must indulge the stupid questions, lets do it. I am not unwilling to do such a large water change if it is absolutely necessary. Sometimes it is. To do so would require destroying my aquascaping to net my fish to put them in buckets, do the water change, cause a whole ton of stress, the like. Sometimes it needs to be done. In this particular case, the water change is necessary to prevent infection and keep water parameters in check. no need to stress the fish by taking them out. In order to keep enough water in there without stressing fish and needing to worry about it, a 75% change is about the most that I would personally do. I do 50% twice a week. Call me lazy for that if you want, i'll just laugh. I respect you as a source of knowledge and as a member of this forum. Don't do me the disservice of trying to start a flame war for ****s and giggles.

So let me rephrase my previous post to your liking.

"In this particular case, I PERSONALLY would not do more than a 75% WC due to the difficulty and stress of moving my fish out of the tank while it is being performed."

More to your liking Fram?

You're right it probably isnt ick. I didnt see it on him today. I also got 8 african cichlids and 3 red tail sharks in there

Cool... the reason I asked is because

I didnt view that as a serious question, that was sarcasm in my eyes and a personal attack. I apologize for overreacting. As usual my temper had the best of me and I was the one swinging. To answer the question, no. Im not unwilling to do a 75% + WC because it is too hard.

OP, sorry for the harsh derailment. Again, my fault. I wish you the best with your little Del, he looks great from what you have shown us. Ill hop off this thread for good so that other members can continue giving you advice.

Thanks guys my del looks like hes gonna do great now. I'm fattening him up and his body is shaping up nicely and he even comes up to me now every time, i love this fish lol... One of my cichlids died though after the water change oh well

Hi again... Delhezi's fin is growing back at a slow pace but he has encountered a new problem... A week ago I watched him swallow a small piece of pebble. Hes been eating fine ever since and I looked at him today, and i see a pair of red gills growing out. Hes also turning pale and the pebble is visible in the lower stomach/intestine area. Should I just leave him alone the pebble looks like it would rip him a new @#$hole if he does pass it LOL

The gills are external gills used when they are juveniles to make catching oxygen easier. With the pebble lodged inside of him it wouldn't surprise me to be constricting airflow somehow. Do you have a picture? How far down the body is the pebble? This can be a tricky situation because if you feed it a pea to ease along the digestion and try and force the pebble out it could possibly have the pebble wreak havoc on the inside. It could also get lodged behind the pebble and just add to the blockage. I would probably gamble and try and feed it peas. If you see any bleeding possibly resulting from this I would add salt, and some bacterial and fungal preventives to the tank to try and prevent any damage further occurring to the inside. If you decide not to feed peas I would probably just try and wait it out and try and feed him just enough to get by, but not too much at a time to prevent blockage/disturbance of the pebble.

I do atleast 80% wc every weekend lol QUOTE="Durrells, post: 7282300, member: 103128"]I would never do more than about 75% water change at a time, just too stinkin hard otherwise. That should be plenty in the way of fresh water. As for the Ick, you probably know the drill, 86deg and AQ salt. And patience.[/QUOTE]

Just a quick update on the pebble issue... it seems he regurgitated it after not eating for a few days. I didn't withhold food he just ignored it. The pebble was clearly visible in the left side of the stomach and now its gone! The fin is growing back nicely (about 50%). Also I just bought an albino bichir 3 days ago at about 4" and now hes around 5.5" the delhezi hasn't grown at all
