What you are describing is likely just dropping a fish in hot water thereby killing it through sudden thermal shock. Your not going to kill a fish by boiling water and allowing it to cool unless you where to replace incoming oxygen with something else as it cools.

exactly. i was going to suggest that whomever did the experiment perhaps just throw the fish into the boiling water and get it over with...that whole technique described is completely asinine when it comes to euthanizing fish...like richard, myself, and several others said...freeze them or a quick blow to the head...if you have access to MS-222/tricaine that also works well.--

nooo the water has already been allowed to cool. but i think the replacing of oxygen makes the most sense.
