Canada & the USA now have approval for use of insect feed for farm fish destined for human consumption.

and even the uber picky EU have gotten on board with this novel source of protein.

      http://www.allaboutfeed.net/New-Pro...agrees-on-insect-protein-for-aquafeed-70425E/

It appears that Whole Dried Black Soldier Fly Larvae is the main source for the insect meal being used. Nutrafin started using it in their Bug Bites formula a year or two ago,

It looks like this is really taking off, with producers around the world going full force in establishing this new market. With the pressure on the global supply of fish meal, and rising costs, we will probably be seeing more pet foods containing this ingredient in the future.

It's just as good as any other protein source and better than some. Plus fish naturally eat bugs in the wild anyways.

I think PETA is already gearing up for this battle for the "rights for bugs"

Hey, insects have rights too! lol

      Not exactly.

      http://www.allaboutfeed.net/New-Pro...-replacement-2704935W/?intcmp=related-content

Even in its defatted form, it will average approx. 55% crude protein, and its high in chitin, which adds fiber content. A quality fishmeal, such as herring meal, averages 70% protein. That, and fishmeal contains natural growth hormones, which I suspect that science won't find in bugs. Even the Nutrafin food contains fishmeal. The beauty of insect meal is as celebrist stated, it's a very sustainable source of protein.

Hello; As a filler it should reduce the demand on fishmeal.
While we humans have been instrumental is the extinction of a number of species, I have read that we have yet to do in an insect species.
I have swatted flys and fed them to my fish. I also raised wingless fruit flies (drosophila melongaster ) for fish food.

I wonder what the odds it will be approved for humans before long?

I am sure it's being looked in to I think the main thing holding it back is trying to market it to us fussy westerners.
