I just fed each of my cichlids(convict excluded) two roaches a piece about 30 min ago.

please tell me they weren't cockroaches!

I use to feed my Green Sunfish any insect i could find.
Those guys would eat anything that fit in there mouth.

that's one way to get rid of them. I hate those things, living without a head just isn't natural.

Gotta be careful of pesticides, herbicides, and other chemicals the bugs may have come into contact with. Even if it's not enough to harm the insect, the chemical will accumulate in the fatty flesh and red muscle (along the lateral line) of your fish. Again, you may not see an immediate effect, but over time, you will.

Not only that but there's the issue of parasites. Store bought crickets, etc. will probably have a greater chance of not carrying parasites because they have been originally lab bred then allowed to naturally breed under controlled conditions. Years ago my kids used to swat any fly that entered the house and feed it to the fish. I stopped that because who knows where that fly has been and/or what is it infected with.

Some folks here have expressed the same concern with live tubiflex worms as carrying parasites.

Some of my tanks are open-topped so fish can chase and feed on insects they see.;) Flies, crickets, grasshoppers, mosquitoes and even ants often end up eaten as they fly about my tanks.

I try and catch flies when they try and get out of the house by flying directly into the window, and just wont stop. I succeed, but my darn angels have lost thier killer instinct. Months ago they would attack anything remotely looking like food. Even flies, they would chew them up into a billion peices.

Now they didnt even ATTEMPT to have a go at some 120+ convict fry. There are 7 babies now at 1" because the parents culled them (On ya mum and dad!). But today, I caught a fly in the window, dipped it into the tank with my fingers, and usually the angels would grab the flies ad even my fingers. But now they cowered into the plants and acted like damn oscars. Sulking. I wish I had my old angels back...
