i have both, and have had everything fresh from african cichlids to oscars, arowanas, discus, etc everything except a hard core planted tank.
both have their advantadges but to say saltwater fish are boring is really retarded, an adult angelfish, grouper, trigger, wrasse etc have much more personality than most freshwater with the exception of some large adult south american cichlids.
the maintenance thing is also wrong, saltwater tanks are just as easy to maintain with the exception of having to mix salt and use ro/di water but that can be automated pretty easily also. filteration with live rock and skimmers makes keeping saltwater fish a breeze.
the expense thing i will agree with for a reef tank, especially sps, you need alot of flow, alot of lights and very good water conditions.
