honestly, this whole thing is pretty confusing, i have heard the midline tail band and red coloration arguments quite a bit, but i honestly don't know what to make of it. i do know that macs can have red eyes too, as both of mine have red eyes, and i know that frank said that spilos have red eyes, so i don't think that would be a trait to look for when trying to distinguish between the two species.

Off of http://www.piranha-info.com/default.php?lang=en&id=s_maculatus

S. maculatus looks very similar to S. Spilopleura, but stands out because of a few features: only juvenile specimen have a clear terminal band on the tail fin (hyaline edge), where S. spilopleura keeps this characteristic throughout its life. Also, S. maculatus' ventral fins have a black 'tips', opposed to the clear fins of S. spilopleura.
Adult specimen, just like S. Spilopleura, have a for Serrasalmus-standards very convex head shape, and often resemble Pygocentrus-species in appearance. It also shares its bright gold-yellow coloration, although some specimen also have a partly red, orange or purple coloration.

LOL-
Here these are all macs-
Note the difference in head shapes and tail regions......

My thought are simple Sir-

I have had specimens that show different eye traits along with different tail traits----All proved to be macs....

I have seen 1 photo of a supposed Spilo that was scientifically backed up once again suppossedly....And have seen thousands of mac pics

I'll wait for science to figure it out.........

then we're in the same boat... all i know is that i love my macs

ak, i know you mentioned recently that you had lost one of your macs, it wasn't horney was it?

cepon3, i'm leaving it up to you to choose the next topic of conversation....

Sorry man.. havent checked this thread for a couple of days.. Hmmm.. This is totally off the top of my head.. Lets talk about the bone count in piranha.. As Rocust brought up in my other thread.. Anyone have anything interesting to say here.. do the different rhoms have different bone structure?
