Installed my sump baffles

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am thinking it will probably have permanent inhabitants and my 29 will have to be the quarantine/time out tank. I just don't see myself having space like that and not using it all the time.
I'm still working on my sump, but I guess I'll have to use that as my time out tank, since I don't have any others.

Nice job. Anybody who cares enough about their SUMP to DIY some baffles.....

Those baffles are glass in glass tank, right?

They are plexiglass. I had them cut at Lowes. They are all 11-3/4" wide by 16" tall. The only glass they had was some super thin stuff, like 1/16". The silicone seems to be bonding pretty well with the plexiglass. It doesn't have to hold much so I'm not too worried about it not being as strong of a bond as silicone and glass.

What that cost you? Pexiglass is acrylic for some of you who get confused. I might make a bigger sump so does it bow at all?

I think the baffles cost a total of $40. I got two sheets of 1/4" and they cut it for free.

I haven't run water through it yet but I doubt it will bow much, if at all. I will probably let it cure for a week and then fill it up and run water through it next weekend. Hopefully, I will have no leaks.

Nice! I went to home depot and they refused to cut it for me and then I was like eff it I already have a sump lol.

I wanted a 55 gallon vs a 40 gallon sump just so I can have more media.

I wanted the 55 so I had room for a refugium in the middle. I may replace it with a 75 eventually, with the same baffle setup, but only if I find a good deal on one.

Just checked how well the silicone was curing and I am already able to pick up each end of the tank by the baffles, not that I will continue doing that though.

You did a great job! I have a 55 gallon I got for $5 at a garage sale and am considering doing the exact same thing for the 220 I picked up this week!
