I just purchased one with a mag12 pump. I'm in the process of building the W/D sump. The plan is to put the skimmer in the sump at the end where the return line will be. Now int he EV-240 manual they say :

"The EV-240 will run best if it is fed by fresh, unfiltered water that has come directly from the tank. If possible, position your skimmer and pump so that unfiltered tank water will get processed, as opposed to letting the skimmer re-skim its own water over and over again."

Now are they says not to put it there? Where is the best place for a skimmer?

thanks

Best place for a skimmer is in line with the direct feed of dirty water. You want the skimmer to have the first shot at anything before any other filter media does.

So basically that the drains lines from the tank and combined them into the skimmer, then onto the sump itself?

Yes...... depending on the particular skimmer (and its design). Some skimmers can be fed in that way and some need to be IN a sump. In the second case, the skimmer should be in the first compartment, upstream from any other type of filtration.

Well my skimmer can be internal or external. But it's pretty big. So I would have to make the prefilter area (first chamber) bigger to accommodate it. Then my bio chamber and then the last chamber where the return pump will be. I guess I'll make the return chamber smaller since the skimmer won't be in there.

But I've never seen any setup like this. The skimmer is always in the return chamber. Why doesn't anyone do this?

Thanks

Because they don't know any better...... It's not like it's wrong, it's just not as efficient as it could be. There's no need to mechanically or biologically filter out something that the skimmer can physically remove first!

By the way, there's lots of good stuff to read on reefcentral.com...... All kinds of pictures, etc. that may help you out.

Thanks, I've been reading some on reefcentral.com.

when you say "There's no need to mechanically or biologically filter out something that the skimmer can physically remove first!"

Do you mean that if the skimmer sits in the first chamber where the drain comes in, then bio balls are not needed? I'm a little confused on that.

Thanks

The skimmer will filter out particulate matter that would otherwise create nitrogen waste products... that's is making things a lttle easier in the bio dept. It will also filter out some particulate matter that otherwise your mechanical would be doing, less crap going into that... less maintenance on it.
