OK........ If it were a reef you wouldn't need bioballs at all. If it is lightly stocked, you still might not need them (assuming you had tons of live rock/sand, a strong skimmer, and perhaps a macroalgae filled refugium).
 
Well, I'll probably have some messy eaters in there. Triggers, puffer, eels. So I'll do them just to be sure. Now I'm thinking of a fuge/refugium. Are they the same thing? How big should it be?

Yes.... they are the same thing. The bigger the better! Some people actually plumb off a separate line and use those 300 gallon Rubbermaid vats at fuges, but it is more common just to use whatever will fit under your tank.
 
Now if I plumb off a separate line. Does that need to run to the main tank, or can I run it to the sump. If the sump, where in the sump can I run it?
