Insufficient Filtration

It sounds like your tank is going through a mini cycle. Pick up a bottle of seachem stability, hook up that extra filter you have and keep up with the wc's. you may have lost some bb during the power outage and it's been creeping up.

Do you think i need to get a bigger canister though since i'm going away for a week in less than a week? Since i've been doing 2 water changes a week lately i'm afraid the ammonia will reach fatal levels when i'm away. I really don't want to buy a $200 + filter, but i would rather that than my ray die.

That would be my guess as well. Stability is great stuff. I use it on every new setup just to be safe

Any little bit helps at this point. How many goh is the extra filter you have?

my thoughts: i also was going to suggest a mini-cycle. the arrowana i am sure was giving off a ton of waste/ammonia that was turning into nitrites and then nitrates. assuming his death was unrelated, when he died maybe you also had a die off of some of the bacteria and now your tank is trying to stabilize.

as for the new canister filter - I was using only a wet/dry filter and i only have time to do a water change once a week...around 30% or so at a time. with my stock that was getting a little lite so i decided to add a canister. my nitrates were getting high by the end of the week and some of the crap wasnt braking down as fast as i would like. I added a canister to suck up some of the detritus closer to the bottom of the tank since my wet/dry drained from the surface.

I added a rena xp4 and put a little bio in there, but mostly added mechanical filter pads. the poop got sucked up faster (and that was nice,) but it only helped a little on the parameters. I found that the canister is a huge pain in the ass to clean after being using to the wet/dry sump. it more than doubles the cleanup time for my weekly cleanings.

I decided to see what would happen if i only did the canister every other week and right after i did my water change the first time without changing out the canister filtration it was like i didnt do anything. my nitrates were at 80 ppm! by adding a canister filter i doubled my cleaning time and had very minimal gain in water quality.

I think if you are already using a sump, you probably already have the best form of filtration especially if you are using a filter sock for mechanical. it didnt help me so i wouldnt recommend it.
