if i was to insulate the inside of my tank with insulation foam board, and the back side of my tank , and all around my sump, would it keep the water warmer and save my parents money on the electricity bill or will it make no difference, also would it make my sump quieter

would it work or help with anything

I can't really comment on it's effect on heat loss, but the inside of the cabinet on my 4x2x2 is covered in sound proofing foam and it's almost completely silent, you can't hear the trickle in the sump or the return pump. I also have a durso standpipe in the overflow box, without it the tank sounds more like a waterfall....

were do u get sound proof foam is it the same as insulation foam

If you want it 100% sound proof then use dynamat. My brother does car audio and this is what they use on the cars they do big loud systems in. In the cars it can be ridiculously loud and you can't hear a sound standing right outside of the cars.

is there anything affordable

So you are planning to insulate the inside of your tank to try to save how much money? Have you considered getting a job and pitching in on the bill or if things are that dire just shut things down until you can support yourself. Or just buy a goldfish and go cold water.

On a side note I've noticed a lot of kids here with similar issues, how did you get the tank in the fist place? An 180 gallon tank is not cheap, didn't anyone consider running costs?

Regular r11 insulation does a good job of sound proofing, should run $10-15

sounds good and i could double insulate it to make sure sound doesnt go through any other ideas
