I use normal styrofoam that I find in trash cans, etc. The stuff use for packing or for beer coolers, it all works. And yes, it prevents so much heat loss that you can actually downgrade your heater. I just used black duct tape and wrapped the back and sides. Simple, ugly and effective. This is in the basement fish room, so ugly is perfectly acceptable. You might want to paint yours first, then tape it on.

yeah i am painting mine black its going inside my stand but black absorbs more heat than white

In the Spring and Summer, it is very warm so the heaters would not be turning on too much. I always notice a large decrease in my electric bill during the warmer months.

okay so my tank heaters are always green (at right temp) instead of red like before(not at the set temp) but it did not silence the sump that much
