johno, i feel that there has been a misunderstanding between us. The natures of threads on this post recently have been somewhat harsh (my own notwithstanding). I have sent you a PM, which I hope you will respond to.

viscoius, I know there is a breed of deep salt water fish that uses a type of bioluminescent protein or bacteria to make their eyes glow... would it be possible to use this bacteria to make the fish glow instead of changing their DNA structure?

oops, sorry, I missed this one. Probably not. The bacteria is saltwater, and its osmoregulatory systems have evolved to be very different form those of freshwater fish. Also, were the bacteria to be changed instead of the fish, they would still be free bacteria. In the open deep ocean, their movement is very limited to where their food is, so they stay with the host. In a small confined aquarium, they would probably spread, and colonize other objects/fish in the tank. So, no, I don't think so.

Hey man thanks for the PM It is unnecessary as I take none of this personally. I am sure there are many things we would agree on and I have truly enjoyed our discussion here which for the most part has stayed pretty adult considering it is such a heated subject.

I truly respect you for the work you have done and the education it took to get you where you are. After your PM I am positive you have the well being of the fish in mind.

Thank you for the intellectual debate between two adults which can rarely take place on a forum on the internet without flaming. I think it is best if we agree to disagree with the understanding that you have the best interest of the fish in mind.

BUT I still do not want any glowing fish

I'm closing this thread now people are getting a little heated and are not playing by the rules getting a little personal and to prevent something serious happening i'm choosing to close it.
