interested in getting a rope

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
actually i too notice that many times the ropefish at lfs don't look to be in the best health condition.

thanks for ur information.
the rope i saw is pretty active and is in a tank with 3 tigers (Datnoids).
and they are doin jus fine.
should be going down to get it soon.

It's not often mentioned but ropes are more active and eat better in groups. I have 6 of them between 8 - 13 inches who all lay on each other when there not swimming around. They enjoy groups of 5 plus much like clown loaches. If you can id suggest getting more. Mine show zero agression towards each other and also started eating better after putting more ropefish in. Mine don't seem to like carnivore pellets but have started taking frozen shrimp from walmart. I built a ropefish jungle gym out of clean plastic 1 1/4 inch tubing from home depot and they spend most of the daylight hours in the tube much like a ghost knife and are very active at night.

Well hope my little bit of info helped.

yall r smoking crack... they wont try to eat the rope fish. It will be fine. a ropfish can hunt very effectively just like ur gars. when it is hunting it will often bloat itself up n float on the surface looking like a stick and then when a feeder comes close it just slams on it like a snake... its awesome to watch. People say you should get more than one rope because they like to cuddle up together when hiding but i have just one and he seems fine...

No problem - sometimes I take things the wrong way because there are so many flamers on MFK it's not even funny anymore. So... glad you weren't one of 'em. I was just wondering if they are more active in an aquarium, as opposed to in a LFS? Do they settle down well, or are they one of those fish that could "live or die" after taking it home? (You know what I mean)

actually, i think it depends on the fish's personality. some are active, some not.
advantage of being a lungy owner... we don't mind having less active fishes. :)

just remember, one of the most important things when keeping a rope is that u'r tank is sealed real well. i had one in one of my 50's that was entirely sealed all except a seemingly too small hole next to my heater. well the rope never seemed like he had any interest in escaping but long story short found him behind the tank one day all crispy and now he sits on top my computer monitor and watches me type.

all aquarium fish are capable of reach the size they atain in the wild
Except for the ones bred with hormones.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I'm trying to find a definitive answer to how big ropefish get, and I've NEVER seen a picture or video of all these supposed 3' ropefish.

Lets have some PROOF here. Link me to a picture, video, or some kind of published report. Lets see it. I've googled. I haven't seen a single damn picture of ropefish that I would estimate at over about 20".
