170 gallon.... 7 rbp at 4in., approximately 15 crayfish, 2 res turtles, green sunfish, and rock bass. All have been cohabing for over a week. The turtles and piranhas have no interest in one another but do ten to steal food from one another. The rock bass and sunfish are constantly hiding so have yet to be eaten although their fins are a little tore up. No big deal I lose them b they are easily caught right beside my house. The turtles typically stay up top or bask while the Ps are always at the bottom. And as for the crayfish they are an occasional snack for everyone. I know the setup sounds crazy bc of the turtles but the same turtles once lived with a jack demsey red terror 2 parrots and other various fish for over a year so I'm goin to gie it a shot again. I'm open to all opinions, advice, and experience, even criticism lol.

sounds interesting, I'd love to see some pictures of your setup.
The rbps are still small so shouldn't bother other fish or the res too much, once they get bigger things could change. how big are the res? once they get big all the other fish could be in danger.
do you have the rest constantly in water or you have a section of "dry land" for them to rest?
when you catch those sun fish and rock bass from your local water bodies, do you quarantine them before put them to into the piranha tank? if you don't quarantine you are increasing the chance of introducing parasites into your tank.

Yes all fish are quarantined before introduction. The res are basically full grown they're both a little over three years old one of them is much larger than the other. The entire tank is water and I have a floating basking spot for the turtles. I will try to get some pics up tonight of the tank. I would right now but I gotta go watch Pittsburgh smash the Miami dolphins first. Pics comin soon.

As long as you don't mind the losing the other fish & crays to the p's eventually. I would move the turtles before they get hurt, though. Reds can do some serious damage and they won't be 4" for long. You have a nice big tank that could support almost twice as many reds; you should ditch the other fish and throw some more reds in there. That's what I would do anyway, after they eat the other fish LOL
The one thing I don't like about keeping bigger fish with p's is they get harrassed so much, and basically live in fear and are stressed all the time, always getting bit. I just don't think it's a cool thing to do to them so I only put in smaller fish that get eaten fast. Crays can get by for a while if they are smart and hide, but eventually become snacks.

I actually agree with you 100% about the bigger fish being harrassed both fish are pretty tore up so I think I'm going to move them to my 55... The only problem with me getting more rbp for my tank is money. The only 3-4 inch rbp I can find are at least $20 each. Any cheaper prices would be appreciated. As I said I will post pics soon so maybe someone more creative than myself can give me some ideas.

for cheaper price you'll probably have to buy online, see if other people in your area interested in a group buy so you can split the shipping. or check out craigslist or the ad section here and on pfury to see if there's any one local of you selling their p's

How many do you think I could keep in a 170 without alot of problems? Iwas planning on having pics up tonight but i can't find a working camera... There is something wrong with mine... I'm going to get some up soon so that I get some ideas

what's the footprint of your tank? I had 11 mix pygos in my 180g before.
a dozen should be fine, depends on how you have the tank setup. pretty bare or a lot of decor? also the filtration limits the amount of fish you can have in there too.

Haha yea I really hated the idea of only being able to have one type of fish especially since there are times when my reds just sit and chill for hours at a time. After reading posts of posts and articles about mixing other fish with piranhas I decided that it's a bad idea to put any nice fish in there so I figured I would go with something a little tougher. My turtles look like tanks goin through the water. My biggest fear is when the rbp get bigger that they may take off a leg or somethin. Does anyone know if turtles grow back missing limbs lol? Btw my tank is 6 ft long 30ish tall and 18 deep. It's actually 168 gallons but it's easier to just say 170. The group of ps I have now were bought from aquascape online. I purchased ten but three were killed off shortly after I bought them. They cost me almost a hundred dollars after shipping and they were barely an inch long. I thought that seemed a little high. Any suggestions for other good sites with cheaper prices I prolly need them to be at least 3 inches when I buy them.
