IN YOUR HEAD
i can get a 7. 5" fully rolled marble male. my thought was could it breed with a hystrix female? i started thinking about it back when i thought about motoro x retic crosses and such. seemed "not possible" due to mature sizes of each. now if this male i may get is a midget marble persay could it then breed successfully with a hystrix female?

i have been working on a female/females for my male hystrix for a bit now and i thought about geting a mm. just wondering if i should watch out for hybridizing with my future hystrix group.

It is possible but most of the so called midget marbles that come in with already rolled claspers tend to not want to breed. Or atleast the people I know that have them have not had any luck.

Bingo. People don't have the best of luck breeding Hystrix either. Many members here have had them for several years and still no luck.

I'd concentrate on keeping rays right now and worry about breeding down the road as it's gonna take a while before that Hystrix is even close to mature. IF you start now maybe you'll get all the filter bugs worked out and a maintainance plan that will keep water parameters up to snuff so that when they are old enough they actually breed.

I've had a mature midgetr male with me for almost 5 years now. Always kept with mature females, and has never been a father.

interesting. i wonder why they are so stubborn. could they just be sterile as a part of the midget defect?

i plan on having all the rkight things for breeding to happen, but other then a goal of mine it is not a must. i am into rays for rays, breeding would be a side bennifit. i was mainly curious if it could happen more then if it is going to happen. if it were to happen i think it could have some cool looking pups.

so far all my ray experiences (this hystrix is not my first) have had perfict water. right now my ray tank is sitting at 10ppm nitrate, 0ppm nitrite, 0ppm ammonia. it is crystal clear and perfict. it is planted and my ray is in perfict condition. my vatf with it has grown and is perfict also.

i know if my wife didnt want me to go the "cheap route" when i got all those retics before i would still have they rays. i wanted hystrix then and she said they were to much, she said motoros were to much. now she has been in el salvador for a few months so i got the fish i wanted before that she didnt want me to get. the fish have been great. it has been nice to start with a heathly ray from a good dealer instead of the crap rays i got from tfd.

here is a current pic of my hystrix. i just hate how my phone makes his eyes look cloudy from the lighting even though they are not.

the mark on its tail is from my vatf. it had a bit of shrimp get stuck on a dentical and when the vatf grabbed the shrimp it nipped the tail along with the shrimp. the vatf leaves the ray alone, this was a freak occurence.

Perfect eh?

Living in MN alone tells me your water is far from perfect. IF it was "perfect" the guy up there that's been importing rays for the last decade or so wouldn't be running RO water. The good ol 0/0/less then 10 bit means nothing more then BB is present.

If you wanna take that approach then I'm sure you have it all figured out in that perfect tank, and everything from here on out will be gravy...... Good luck.
