Cichla intermedia are nearly endemic to the Orinoco basin; that is, they are only found in the Negro (Amazonas) basin in the Casiquiare river and its tributaries. I have personally seen fishes of this species from the Caura, Capanaparo, Cinaruco, Parguaza, Atapabo, Ventuari, Iguapo, Ocamo, Pamoni, Orinoco mainstem above Mavaca, Casiquiare mainstem, and Siapa rivers. They are likely also in the Aro, Cuchivero, and other clearwater Orinoco tributaries of the Guayana shield, and moderate blackwater tributaries of the Orinoco in Colombia such as the Inirida.
