internal moving bed filter

That's almost the same design as the Kaldnes K1 media filters. Hope it work as good. I'm trying to see how cheap Kaldnes K1 media are from oversea compare to buying it here.

I believe that the video is of plastic straws cut up instead of k1. That would probably be the cheapest when taking into consideration the shipping vs. getting it at the dollar store. $4 should fill up a 2L bottle with leaving enough room for movement.

I can sell you K1 way cheaper than anyone from overseas.....Just hit me up with a pm..... The average online price is between 70 to 80.00 per cubic foot and then you have to have it shipped.

Just throwing this out there for ya!!! Also, a moving bed filter with Kaldness media is the biological filtration there is with out a doubt...it will reduce your water changes and your fish will be very healthy and more active!

so how good is the straw moving media?? i was planing to make one but huge one for my 200 gallon tank but it will be set up in the sump.. I have access to so many straws i work in a restaurant..i can cut them in small pieces like maybe 1/4 inch or so you think it would work?? that way i can start collecting my straws from work...FREE STRAWS may i add........lol...i was going to open up a thread but not sure i dont want to jack your thread though just asking ..
:)

Hey cjbarth,

Just wondering how k1 reduces water changes? I know the continual movement removes the garbage from the media, but am not sure how it reduces nitrates which would reduce water changes?

Is it unique to k1 or do all moving bed filters do this?

It provides increased surface area for beneficial bacteria. This bacteria, as you probably know, helps to break down waste by-products. The moving action helps to break off bacteria that can recultivate on other surfaces of the tank and regenerate on the media itself. This is not unique to kaldness. You can use different types of media like sand, straws etc. What you use will require different current requirements. Some like kaldness need a high air bubble current while sand can use water by pump or gravity. Although sand and kaldness are slightly different in form the end result is the same, an increased surface area for bb.

You also mentioned water changes. The potential to remove waste by moving bed filters is huge so you could definitely slow down on water changes. I would still do them periodically though.
