Internet giants consider blackout to protest SOPA

I new about this along time ago didn't think it would survive no bill like this has lasted so flippin long. I'm not only surprised that normal people aren't that concerned as I'm surprised it isn't the most fretted over thing ever. I think it shows most people hate pirate, piracy is not as mainstream as the bill's authors would propose so buy putting piracy in the bill name it gathers support though really doesn't do anything about it but rather hands the reigns for the internet to private interests to control with the backing(not oversight) of the US government. Its like the beginning of a bad sci-fi movie or something... and thus the resistance was born. :P

so......

now that the dust is clearing.......ahem......Welcome to my world 20 years ago lol.

It's interesting that this topic comes up, and as a singer /songwriter who makes a living making music, I can honestly say, all the laws on earth will not stop piracy. It's nice to see folks make it a subject of debate and something to discuss, but .....speaking from experience, it wont ever work.

What are you gonna do? Un-invent the computer. The the nature of the world we live in and it isn't ever going away.

I remember having a discussion with my cousin about 15 years ago, who's an animator for Pixar, about what could be done to stop "Napster" and internet piracy, and how it much seriously affects how "musicians" earn a living. I also remember telling him that the music business was not a big enough entity to take on the issue alone and that once the film industry was affected, that we would get some much needed help. With hd cameras now on every smartphone on earth, we are now there.....

Unfortunatley, laws wont stop folks from breaking them, and no matter how much we think regulations will stop them, there's always a way around it........

Just my experience of course, for the last 2 decades...........

but it is nice to see there are still folks that have some morals and know that stealing is wrong. That doesn't pay the bills of course, but it at least makes me realize humanity isn't dead......it's just getting buried deeper and deeper in cyberspace

Mom and pop shops aren't dieing because of the internet they are going extinct because of Walmart. Nobody is proposing a ban on Walmart, well no one except the movie WALL-E.

Legislating against the freedoms that America holds so dear has become the American governments favourite past time. Mostly lead by a fear mongering ultra right wing conservative sector. Funny the same conservative right that hates countries like Korea and China for censor their citizens life, is currently working on taking away as much freedom as possible from its citizens.
Agreed.

Sorry, but not even close. Not by a longshot........

Walmart and Best Buy are NOT going to sell cd's and soon dvd's, because the internet has eroded the sales to the point that it's not economically viable to do so. Mom and Pops stores have been, on the whole, "dead", for years........some are just stronger and take longer to kill.
.....
Mom and pops stores aren't going extinct because of Wal-Mart.........it's ,directly because of the internet, and here's why.

Internet piracy makes it virtually impossible for any artist to "sell" and profit from any cd's or dvd's the way we used to know, regardless of whether those cd's are sold by Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Tower or Mom and Pops stores. Years ago, Soundscan literally scanned the product and you got paid. Simple.

The difference between the Mom and Pop's stores and Wal-Mart is, WM sells groceries, diapers, tampons, fish, furniture, eyeglasses, tires, etc........stuff you can't steal on the basis of 0's and 1's. And there's usually a McDonalds on site to get a cheeseburger while you shop...........:barf: Either way, they sell things that you can't steal without a mask and a gun

I'm not defending Wally world by any means here........it's just that pinning the erosion of sales on them is stupid. AC DC is a perfect example. Wal-Mart uses it's leverage in the marketplace to secure "exclusive" deals with an artist, like AC DC, because the artist knows they can cash in, and get a huge payday to only allow Wal-mart to sell it's cd's or dvd's..........of which sales are only really is good for about 1 to 2 weeks. Once the internet has it, ..........it's available to whoever knows how to click the mouse on their computer. One it's viral, it's free......

This has nothing to do with "right" or 'left". It definitely has to do with "free" and legislating or regulating is about as far from"right" as you can get.

I have my own personal issues with Wal-Mart, but coming from someone who is directly affected by internet piracy, to try to pin- the -tag on the Wal-Mart just doesn't fly..... and it's funny how many liberals want to try. I suppose it's fashionable............or trendy........either way, it's wrong...........

As an independent (politically) I can say, " I don't give a s**t". As a CEO and owner of an actual record label that's directly affected by the subject at hand, I can say that unless you actually take part in a monthly shareholders meeting with WEA(Warner/Electra/Atlantic) or Pixar, since WALL-E was referenced , you really just don't' know what you're talking about.

I actually DO have to take part in these monthly meetings. Unfortunately, jobs and " careers' are usually at stake when we discuss the shrinkage of the industry and Wal-Mart is actually one of the few corporations that we can still find support from.......because of the diapers, tampons and tires......

NOT because of legislation, but because we have found a way to lesson the blow of the inevitable. Intellectual properties are free because people like you and I have access to them via the computer.............It's up to you and I how we choose to proceed, once the available content sits on our desktops. And this had NOTHING to do with Wal-Mart and or politics......now it's a moral issue, plain and simple.
