Hey im chris
Ive actually just fully got into the hobby a few months ago.
ever since I was a kid i've always wanted a fish tank. (currently have a 20 gal running with goldfish. -.-)
but I never knew how monstrous, or amazing it could be.
So now i've got serious and done alot of research about all kinds of fish and was able to get a 40 gal ready to be filled up.

Its 36inX15inX17in long. Got a whisper HangOverBack, plus a diy drip canister, and co2 bubbler ready to go. I need some help since i've been debating from what I should stock in my 40 gal with?
HELP?

Thanks,
Itzchrissmeng

well I just got into the hobby this january but I spend most of my life reading about fish so I have acquired quite a bit of knowledge. personally a 40 is kind of small ( lol I still have my 37 soon to be a 55) I have a jd which is kind of upsetting cause I can t have any another cichlids. I have

african cichlids

a catfish tank yould be cool I saw an amazing tank on youtube but your tank would be a bit small as some catfish grow quite large

you could also get bichirs they seem cool and I am going to get one senegal bichirs are easy to get you hands on but not very colorful.

I also have a small peacock eel hes very cute and playful but it took some time for him to actually show him self and he is still a bit shy

you could also have needle fish, they are fake gaars and depending on the dimensions of you tank that could be cool.

there are really so many things you can stock a tank with so you have to decide what kind of tank you want. if you go with a very aggressive fish he will be alone. so I think African cichlids would be cool cause you could have a couple and they have interesting behaviors. good luck

in a 40 gal you culd house some pictus cats and chcilids that wuld make a cool display tank.

you could do figure 8 puffers or GSPs and eventually turn to BR (brackish)

Or get a leporinus

(Or 18 ID sharks, 6 red tail cats and 15 jardini's as well as some mbu puffers! JK DO NOT DO THIS)

Lols thanks! Yeah im super sad how small it is cause I cant be monster with it less its just meant to be an outgrow tank. but still, I got this 40 gal for free so im more than happy with what I have till I can get a something more like 100s+

p.s. that is a nice catfish set up forsure

or just go with some puffers or leps. I tell you leps are monsters. They will accept live prey, vegies, flakes, pellets, bloodworms, brine shrimp and they do show aggresion (eating other tank mates's eyes out and fin tearing)

If you want cichlids I would go the dwarf cichlid route. Maybe a couple of rams, maybe some apistos, dwarf acaras, maybe even dwarf pikes. All of these are rewarding but most of these are finicky with water quality so as long as your water is in their optimal range you should be good. You could also go with african cichlids as they are advised to be kept in higher densities (within reason). So you still have alot of options to go with.
