In terms of actually adding fish, I find it is easiest to wait until night, with the lights off. Then, the Mbu wakes up with the other fish there vs. watching you add something to the tank, which they are conditioned to regard as food.

Just curious: Have you had Mbu attack and consume other fish before?

Yes, twice...the first time, I dripped a group of 7 Neolamprologus marunguensis, netted them and dumped them into the tank. He killed four of them in about five seconds, and ate the ones he killed in about ten more seconds. It was wild, and stupid of me not to anticipate given his crazy feeding response. He left the rest alone, though, and when I added more (currently at 11 total, no more planned) I did it at night and he never even looks at them. I have also done this with the 3 Labidochromis/Metriaclima hybrids I am removing tonight, no problem. I added a bunch of small yellow L144 BNP and he snacked on those, I think they were just too slow and small and tempting as they clung to the glass to resist. I never saw them getting eaten but they all disappeared but one, which figured out to stay behind the FX6 intake. (I have since removed the L144 and use CAE for algae, and they do fine.)

Yes, Mbu...but he seemed to have forgotten that at that moment. Again, in my view it is a question of a conditioned response. If I stick a chopstick in the water he will bite it, instantly, and then once he understands it is not food, he is cool. Hence I am not one of those owners who can play with his Mbu by putting his hand in the water.

My mbu seems to be doing well with juvie cichlids(mellow malawi haps and victorians). I think they are fast enough he doesn't see them as food. I think plecos might be too tempting a target and look like food.
