Introducing your dog to a newborn baby

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hello; My niece had a dog before her first child. The dog was not well trained. It was unplesant to visit as neither my niece or her husband had control of the dog. After the first child they eventually had to get rid of the dog. Very probably not the best outcome for the dog but likely the best solution for ths safety of the child. I imagine the dog people on this forum may find this the wrong approach but I was relieved when the dog was gone.

That you are having the fears you describe to the point of isolating the dog and not allowing it to be around the baby without an adult around seems telling. You are on the scene and have a sense of the situation. Do not dismiss your feelings outright. It is your responsibility to keep the baby safe.

Even small breeds of dog have been reported to injure babies.

Good luck with what ever path you take.

Its going really well. Both the baby and the dog are still alive. Haha

She's about 3 weeks old now. The dog has accepted her presence and ignores her. He's used to the occasional crying. When he does interact he seems very gentle. He moves very slowly and inches towards her. I've had the dog snuggle up next to us before on the bed or couch.

Like I said, he's harmless and would do nothing intentional, but he's energetic and still a puppy. I feel like if he jumps all over the baby, it's my fault. Because atleast for now, a newborn does not belong anywhere that a dog can access unless the baby is under my supervision. It'll be a different story when she's crawling around the carpet and starting to walk, and by that point both the dog and baby will be older
