This hobby has a pretty big learning curve. Years ago when I started in the hobby there were no internet forums or internet for that matter. Some books helped but a lot was trial and error, needless to say I killed more fish then I care to admit. If you have a local fish club in your area it would be good to go to a meeting and meet some of the people, they are great places to learn. Having some meds on hand never hurts just in case. Aquarium salt, Epsome salt, API general cure (metro/prazi) or some Tetra parasite clear are good to keep on hand Antibiotics should only be used if you no what you are treating and how to determine which one is better for what and when. One thing I would mention would be to avoid using feeders and concentrate on getting him on a high quality pellet. As far as IPs go it is very common for fish to come in with them. Quarenteen is very important, in the future when and if you decide to add anything new to a tank of established fish. In the case of the dreded white stringy poop some Prazipro or the API General cure should clear it up. So in the future you see it and you most likly will see it again you'll have a better idea about what to do. keep the faith ask all the questions you have someone here will have an answer for you. Stay with it.
