hey guys i have a question about sumps...
if i put a heater in my 45 gallon sump, how many watts should it be?
the tank that the sump is for is a 240 gallon tank...

...or should i just buy a heater and put it in the tank instead of the sump?
what do you guys think?

The heater needs to be able to heat ALL of the water in the system, i.e. tank volume + sump volume so about 285 gallons. I think the general rule for heating is about 3 watts per gallon so you'll need about 900W of heating.

Of course, that's just a rough estimation. It depends a lot on how cold the room gets and how warm you want the tank to be. I had to use two 300W heaters on my 110 gal to keep it heated since the temperature difference between the tank and the room was about 10 degrees celcius (about 50 deg. F).

I put my heater in the sump. Its easier to heat smaller amounts of water. The heated water is then dispersed into your tank and slowly increases your tanks overall temperature. It may take a day to get your tank to optimal temp, but it will not budge from that temp once it is there as long as your heater is doing its job.

The heater size is the same whether you have it in the tank or the sump. Unless you have terrible water circulation, the position of the heater(s) is irrelevant.
