i see... so like a 400 watt heater in a 45 gallon sump is fine?
it wouldnt get too hot in the sump?

As previously mentioned... provided you have proper water circulation...

Regarding heating, look at your tank and sump as one body of water... because they are...

2~3W per gallon is sufficient under typical conditions... (air 68*F or warmer, water around 80*F)... Therefore 600~850W should be sufficient...

If you do not have proper water circulation, you may have heating issues, and the solution is to increase water circulation...

hey guys i have a question about sumps...
if i put a heater in my 45 gallon sump, how many watts should it be?
the tank that the sump is for is a 240 gallon tank...

...or should i just buy a heater and put it in the tank instead of the sump?
what do you guys think?
you really just hijacked this thread. In the future, it is proper etiquette to make your own thread to ask a question like that. Otherwise, you're kind of eclipsing the original poster's thread

true... but at the same time i dont like making a website thats swamped with a crapload of threads already worse by making a new thread everytime i have a question. so instead i go to a thread that has something to do with the information i need. in this case information about diy sumps, ect.

I am using two 300 watt heaters to heat my 300 gallon tank plus 75 gallon sump. I keep my house at 68 degrees during the Winter.

With that said, you really should start a new thread for a question like this. Due to you threadjacking the OP hasn't received one response to his question.

Welcome to MFK. So what all do you have in each tank? Also, are you planning on upgrading in the near future. You are going to need (at minimum) a 240 gallon tank for those arrows. As for the 55 gallon, do you want a single fish or do you want a community tank?
