Introduction + My 29 gallon native Virginia tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Dionysus... Most states have regulations prohibiting the catch and keep of native fish without a special permit acquired from the state. Some states will not issue you a permit if your purpose is not one of a research mindset. However it is not hard to justify it as research. Some states it is rather easy to acquire a permit for a hobbyist... You would have to research your specific location for further details. Also it is important to know that if you choose to keep native fish and acquire a permit, in most locations, the state then has the right to make inspection visits to your home to ensure you have what you say you have and are not misusing the permit or mistreating the fish. Hope this info has helped answer your questions.

I like the bobber.

Definitely some helpful info fishbrains, I'll check more into state regulations. I kno a few friends who keep bluegills n bass, even musky with no permit, but id rather play it safe ;) Thanks for input!

First off, I'd like to thank everyone for the warm welcome!

Warmouth: thank you, the NANFA forums are my next stop. I certainly was not expecting the Gambusia to be so belligerent.

Owain: sounds like an awesome tank, have you posted it on here? If so, I'll check it out!

Amber: thank you, your 125 is incredible, I really like the diversity.

Umbra: I'd say the mudminnow is currently ~ 3-3 1/2 inches. I've caught quite a few from the same area and have only seen a couple that were slightly larger than the one I have. I also added some very small mosquito fish that disappeared soon after and I wouldn't be surprised if the mudminnow was the culprit. It is definitely a very interesting little fish.

Lupin: I appreciate it, I have enjoyed the tanks and fish I've seen very much!

Pyramid: Thank you for your input, I would like to add more plants in the vacant areas around the periphery of the tank. I just want to get better lighting and maybe add a layer of laterite to the substrate in spots I'd like to plant before I introduce anything else. So far I haven't had much luck keeping anything submerged. I'll keep you updated and I think I should be able to grab some Hydrocotyle this spring. I wouldn't mind doing a plant trade!

Bderick, Amber and metricliman: Thank you, I felt the bottle and bobber were very much in keeping with the roadside fishing spot I was trying to replicate haha

Dionysus: No offense taken at all, thank you for your input!

Fishbrains: thank you and I definitely appreciate the input. While I don't believe any of the fish I have collected are protected in my area, it is something I probably should have researched more than I did prior to collecting and something I will take into consideration before deciding to stock my tank with anything else.
