inverter questions

ok you asked for the story :grinno:

right now i go netting at least once a week.
i fill up at least 4 buckets each trip.
i use 2 battery powered air pumps "2 d batts each,reason i want to change"
then i put a hose splitter on each pump.
so at the end i have 2 pumps pumping 4 airstones.
not to powerful :irked:
on close nettings it will run for a few hours,car running on the way and back.

what i was thinking is get an inverter.
then get a plug in air pump,or 2.
and then do the splitters to 4 or more airstones.


with my battery powered airpumps i can leave on for a day or 2 strait.
like if i go stay at miami,the inverter would go all day,all night,then all day again.
car only running a bit in the days.

on top of that i want to maybe use the inverter to run a laptop or mini tv or something,not all at once unless i can.

ok......the current draw is not only the wattage you need to power ( air pumps etc) but also there is some loss in the conversion.

if at all possible i would suggest a second battery used as follows....

charge it before your trip.

run off the cigarette lighter when the car is running and either use the spare battery when the car is off or save it to jump start your car if the inverter sucks it down.


now there are basically two type of car/marine batteries starters and deep cycle. each one does it own job best....eg its best not to run your car battery ( starter type ) down........


any chance to plug into 110 at night ???


have an 800watt inverter in my pickup truck for fish transport....heater, filter, air pump....but when i stop i always plug into 110 volts


let me know if this info helps or if the spare ( used ??) battery is out of the question.

a 100wat inverter draws 8 amps at 12 volts plus losses maybe 10 amps............everything else being equal a good auto battery should be able to supply several hundred amp hours without ill effects........... 200amp-hours/10 amps in principle should run 20 hours.....

depends on a good battery and how much juice your car takes to start if you dont carry a spare battery.

johnptc i know you sre no beginner, but i think your headin this fella to a dead battery. we have switched to gen. sets because inverters(all use full)are not really efficient they take way more energy to do the job than thier worth. for fish transport, laptops, bla bla bla.... their ok but will wipe out a 12v automotive batt. in less then 2 hrs depending on loads. not to start a war but i,ve seen it soooo many times it is insane, we had the tv plugged in at the park for the game now van wont start, we were charging the cameras now the car wont start, i can go on but wont. i say use it but dont leave it on w/o vehicle runnning.

so does every electronic thing tell you how many watts it is?
so really,if a tv is a 100 watts it wont work on a 100 wat inverter?

if im on a trip,cars in parking lot over night.
if im netting its,drive to spot,park,net for an hour or 2,drive home.

thats cool the pump i want to use is only 3.5 watts :D

How about using a battery isolator that will allow the secondary battery to charge while the car is running, but separates it from the cars system while it's off? I've used continuous duty golf cart solenoids for this when I was doing car audio and it worked well.

With that method, you could just hook it up to the secondary battery and not have to mess with it (unless the car will be of for quite a while).
