What is a good product to add iodine to your system for sharks? i've came across a seachem brand but wasent sure where to go from there. Ady advice on testing and maintaning the correct level is much appreciated.

DO NOT try to manually adjust your iodine levels. Keep up on a good water change schedule and your mix will keep levels where they need to be. It can be very dangerous to your system for you to have fluctuations in iodine levels. Dosing is not needed.

Much appreciated jworth... I've read that iodine is a must for sharks but was curious if it was already mixed in salt. I use instant ocean always....I've tried other brands that are cheaper in the past and found it longer to cycle my tanks. My system is a 197 with euro reef ins 180 recirculating skimmer, 50lbs. Of rock. 40 breeder sump w/ bio and mech. No carbon or chemical filtration. Also u.v. Sterilizer. Any other equipment or additives needed? My pair of coral cats seems to be thriving just want to ensure they stay that way. Thanks

The benthic sharks that require iodine need it consumed (vitamin supplement to make up for the fact that they aren't getting live food), not as a trace element in the water. There are a few good shark/ray supplements out there. Mazuri makes one of the best.

well what sharks would that be , sorry for asking

all benthic sharks (from what i know). they are all susceptible to goiter from a lack of iodine/-ide in its diet. It is essential for thyroid development. Same with humans that live in land locked nations and never get food from the ocean. Iodine is necessary in human thyroid development as well and a lack of it results in goiter in humans. There are some African and Middle Eastern nations where this is a recurring problems. Look up google images for goiter in benthic sharks and humans, its horrendous.

Just my 2 cents. Im sure Zoodiver knows if there are sharks that dont suffer from this malady.

i have purchased iodine pills from GNC (small dosage) and put them inside of their food to relieve my Rays from goiter, it took around a week for me to see the results

Thanks zoodiver...makes alot more sense now, i'll have to try that mazuri brand

I've been feeding peppermint shrimp, green chromis, and damsels once a week as well as prepared foods. I've always been a firm believer in live food for my freshies. Still going to use the vitamens though i'd imagine the chromis morsels arent enough.
