Iodine levels

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
all benthic sharks (from what i know). they are all susceptible to goiter from a lack of iodine/-ide in its diet. It is essential for thyroid development. Same with humans that live in land locked nations and never get food from the ocean. Iodine is necessary in human thyroid development as well and a lack of it results in goiter in humans. There are some African and Middle Eastern nations where this is a recurring problems. Look up google images for goiter in benthic sharks and humans, its horrendous.

Just my 2 cents. Im sure Zoodiver knows if there are sharks that dont suffer from this malady.

Spot on.

Goiters can be a pain to deal with if not stopped and reversed right away. I suggest the Mazuri (or some type of shark specific) supplement for all sharks, but especially the benthics.

i have purchased iodine pills from GNC (small dosage) and put them inside of their food to relieve my Rays from goiter, it took around a week for me to see the results

That is very risk and can do more harm then good. If you can not afford proper supplimentation and want to increase iodine in your sharks diet, just feed it more squid. :)

Lack of iodine is not the only cause of goiter. Nitrate levels greater then 70mg/l can also cause it! So get your denit filters in check- And not aquapure ones for that matter.

I also add Julian Sprung's Iodine Concentrate to my systems on a regular basis and would recommend doing so. Iodine test kits are available from Salifert. It can saturate quite quickly after several doses. For those of you running ozone on your systems like I do, it reduces iodine so supplementation may be necessary.

I'm using Vita-chem marine to soak silversides in and my coral cat pair is loving it. Is this a decent supplement until i can afford some mazuri pills? Also, thankyou crumbs for further info on iodine. It's always a debate when there are alot of opinions out there.
