My iporangensis just laid eggs about 5 minutes ago and was wondering where can I read up on what to do if I decide to do something? I've had fish lay eggs before but never did anything and since I'm laid off at the current time this might be the time i give it a go.

They're geophagus.

Congrats! You don't hear of these guys being spawned often. I would let the parents do their thing and sort it out, but that's just me.

I agree. See how good they do the first time. If they get it right, I would remove the fry 2-3 weeks after they are free swimming, and eating good. I like to use baby brine shrimp eggs to feed them, but finely crushed flakes also work. Congrats on the spawn. If you decide to sell the fry, send me a pm, I'll take a few of them if you can ship.

Side note, clockwork turned me on to using hikari frozen BBS. Sooo much easier than hatching your own. If you haven't tried any for free swimming fry I would highly recommend it.

The eggs were gone when I woke this morning. They hold their own against my ebjd, severum and bully my nic but when a pair of 12" plecos decide they want to go some where the 5-6" Iporangensis don't have much of a say in the situation. Gonna start doing some research so that I'm prepared when they go at it again. Probably get a divider and sponge filter just to have on hand. Thanks for the advice.

Just another reason why I don't keep Plecos, especially with breeding pairs. They are notorious egg eaters. They do very little as far as keeping algae down at that size in IMO and are not worth the strings of waste they produce. I hope your pair spawns again soon for you.

I wish I could get rid of the plecos but I've had them for 10 years and can't bring myself to parting with them. I've never cared to breed before but if the fish are doing their part I think I'll do the leg work and decide when they go at it again.

Yeah, in a tank with plecos, the chances of having a successful spawn are minimal to none. Most larger and aggressive cichlids usually kill all the plecos in the tank when they get ready to breed. When the lights go out, there's not much the pair can do to stop the plecos from eating the eggs. I say set up a 40 breeder and put the iporangensis alone, and they should be able to spawn successfully. I think PETCO has the $1 per gallon sale going on right now. Once the fry go free swimming, you will have trouble keeping the other fish in the tank from picking them off little by little.

Justin, I will have to try those next time. Thanks for the tip.
