I was wondering whats your experience with irresponsible fish stores? What have they done, that just boiled your blood or someones you know? I want to hear mostly of those classic ma and pa stores but not limited too, chain stores can be included but i'm pretty sure they we know most are pretty bad but if they've done something so over the top lets hear it. By ma and pa I mean like locally own or just like a one of kind place. I just wanted to know things they have done?

Or if there is a thread similar please point me in that direction :)

about a week or so ago i posted about a lps owned by some friends. They arent always in so they have other workers who care for the fish and everything else. Well the other workers pay no attention to the fish and the fish are always sick and the tanks get pretty nasty. It was my place to get stuff i couldnt get anywhere else. Well when i went in last week to see what was going on i noticed the SA lungfish had some new tankmates which were 3 CK's. I saw bite marks all over the lung and all 4 of his leg like feelers were bit right off to a tiny nub. I was so pissed when the girl asked if i needed help i said no but your fish do and ill be talking to Justin who runs the place. I wont be going there for a while if ever again after that

I went to a local cichild breeder and told him I was new to cichilds and had 1 JD, he sold me six fish and said they all would be fine together,well the FH killed all but three,I went back and told him what happened and he said it was my fault for not having enough,after spending 200.00,he wouldn't give no discount or anything to make it right.I trusted his advice being a breeder,I think he did it on purpose to get me to come back and spend more,Never again !

@aquamonster that sucks especially that the stores is a friends that's rough but at least you may have the possibility to help change it!

@excedrin yea that's the bad thing always trusting people that should be trustworthy and they just aren't like at my lfs

So here's my story my lfs is terrible it is by (sorry not any racism intended and not meaning to offend anyone) by foreigners of Asian decent (not very good engish and accent) They keep a fish in poor crowded conditions they are in a small shopping center with a tiny store and most stock is kept in it's hard to say but no more then a 20g it may be a 25g but thats it. They have maybe 6 50g and one 90g at the front, and a few salt water tanks with dividers so each compartment is about 5g for salt water, the rest those 20gs. Now the thing that gets me mad is the quantity of fish in each tank and the size. And the guy doesn't know any actual facts on the fish. This may be long so here it goes in the 90g they keep a +16" silver arrowana 2 12" id sharks a 14" tiger shovelnose a 12" armored catfish and two 13" plecos (rough estimation in all the sizes.) Now the most annoying part is all the 20g. These are just some of the tanks, i went there today he has about 20-30 PACU's 3", in another about 15 "aligator gars 4" (i think they are spotted) with a jardini arrow about 3" another with a cluster of silver arrows about 30 all in horrible condition ripped fins those things that poke out of the mouth broken all about 3" they have a 14" koi in one can't even move around they have 20 4-5" Id sharks in another another with 7" ID sharks and another with about 30 clown loach at 4". With many more fish in horrible condition it just pissed me off today he also had 2 dats but couldn't even see stripes there were all most pitch black from stress! The sad thing is it's the closest fish store to me about 2min drive and everywhere else is about 10-20min with good traffic. The most worst part is he won't educate people on the fish and sell them to people no matter what just for money. He sold me a paroon shark (when i was a noob and he had it mislabbled) claiming it only grows a foot and also wouldn't take it back when i found out tthat they grow way past a foot! so all those monsters there selling like pacu gar arrowana id sharks will probably be sold to uneducated people and wind up giving them poor homes with people who won't be able to supply a large enough home like i fell victim too. Last thing i forgot they had a large pleco in a tank with convicts and a jd except it had no fins and bare bone was exposed. a whitish peach color. No tail fin dorsal side fins nothing just bones and were doing nothing.

Heres some pics of the Tank busters

those are true alligator gars from what i can see id be all over them for $20 a closer picture of the head would make it easier to tell but from what the picture shows they are gator gars

@runitis...

Thats pretty much the story with 99% of tank lfs' over here... Except very few have display tanks 90G or more... And fish compartments are tiny...

Although in their defense the turn over rates are pretty quick... Except with certain fish in which case you do have to feel sorry for them...

Most retailers and wholesalers (not all) will keep fish super crowded just for the turnover, more fish on hand = more quick profits, it's sad that the owners don't know anything about what they are selling, it means they are in it for only the money and not for the love of fishkeeping.those guys won't keep fish in ideal conditions because they hope to sell them to hobbiests quickly, it's our job to make sure they have the best living conditions possible.if they kept fish according to our guide lines they would virtually have no stock, not enough profits and not stay in business , just my 2 cents .this reply only goes for the overly crowded tanks

All those tanks look clean and healthy, so what if there are many fish in it. MFK is the king of overstockage. Maybe they have more fish because they know people will buy up the stock. Do you know the behind the scenes or are you just assuming you know. Fish Stores are a business and if customers will buy it then you sell it. It's simple economics. Some get into this peta save the fish dogma, things like right and wrong change when your in a business. You can't do it right and be in business, well you can but it will cost you more than you profit. You think all these online fish sites are doing it right because you see a fancy website with fancy pictures with fancy marketing wording. For all you know it's some schmuck running it from his 2x2 garage. Asians have been keeping fish since the dawn of time. Westerners love to judge and tweet about it. Which is the more evil, the irresponsible LFS or the irresponsible fish owner ? if you were shopping for a TV at bestbuy would you want to sales rep to tell you, sorry sir, but we can't sell you that big screen, because it's too big for you.

Ive posted about this before. i have a lfs selling blue ring octupuss. another classic thing ill see at a store near me major chain store that has three rows of tank one on top of the other but the bottom one stick out infront of the one before. drives me nuts when i see the fish dude windexing the glass on top and all of it just falls into the tank below. then the next day theyll have mats of dead fish. stupid.

One of my lfs had an ornate bichir which must have been 16-18" and extremely thick in tank that was max 15g. Could only lie diagonally in there. The sight was so disgusting i swear i nearly vomited:(
