I missed the "hex" part of the OP. Will be a little tight for a pair of cons...a 30 long would be a good size for them, and you can probably find one dirt cheap on Craig's List.
Thanks for the info guys. I really appreciate it. I guess I'll have to use it as temp housing. Right now the Mrs. has put all fish projects on hold. The reason why I was asking about this particular tank is because it's up and running with nothing in it.
Well I have a breeding pair of cons, a target fish, and a few dithers in a 20. Ideally, they should be housed in at least a 29, but for now they're doing fine.
I almost missed the hex part too. They should be okay in a 27 gallon long tank but not a hex. They're too territorial to be in a hex tank IMO. Also, even with a 27g or bigger you still might have issues. Good example. My girl friend snagged two Pink Cons from the same batch that were little 1.5"-2" guys when she got them I believe. She had them in a nice 30g long and the they both grew real fast, but the one that grew slightly faster and bigger relentlessly chased and bullied the smaller one within the first month. Had to separate them. So it's hit or miss even with a good sized tank. Welcome to cichlids.
Oddly enough the bully of the group went in a 40g with her BP and they get along fine, and the smaller one that was getting bullied is in with my JD and gets along fine with him.
Yes, forgive us for looking out for the best interest of the fish.
Fact is, a breeding pair of Cons can get extremely aggressive, as many people here can tell you. Sure, it may not mean anything to you if the male turns on the female and kills her from lack of space, but some of us try to avoid that sort of thing if possible.
If you didnt prove you dont know anything about the proper way to house fish on almost every thread you post on, you might have a point. Well that and your stupid sig, ironically misspelled. lol
