Is 78 Watts on a 20g Planted Tank too Much?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
should be fine but you have to be strict with the flourish excel, maybe even up the dose if you see algae growth. Id also suggest that you use Metricide 14 as a substitute for flourish excel. Same thing, just twice as potent and half the price. Hope to see some updates on this tank

I'll defiantly grab some when I run out of Flourish or if algae starts to become an apparent problem. Thanks.

I have to agree with what's been Sao already. That is a very good amount of light on that size of tank. It's not too much , you will be able to grow just about any plant you want. But if u notice any algae growth I does mean that you need to up your dosing with fertilizers. I would use flourish tabs on top of excel of it were me. With out adding c02 though your going to have to be extra careful because with the extra light algae will try to take over quickly

Yes, essentially the more light you have the more your plants will be outcompeted by algae for available CO2. My suggestion would be if you're in it for the long haul and serious about a high light system is to invest in an injected CO2 system and a drop checker and get more aggressive with the fertilization. I scored mine on craigslist for a great price when I was doing a planted tank.
