i have never kept rays before, so i know nothing about them i have an empty 54 gal bowfront i need to do something with so i thought maybe a teacup stingray. is that big enough? should i keep him alone? and the guy @ my lfs calls them teacup rays is that just a general name he calls them because maybe he doesent know what they really are? any advice is helpfull:nilly:

teacup is a term used for young rays, no ray will live comfortably in a 54gal for life

avoid stingrays till you have a much larger tank.... read the stickies at the top of the forum

Teacup usually refers to the size the ray is and there is no ray that can live in that size tank for life. Like nic said read the stickies they will help.

Get in some good research first. That is always key. As mentioned above the stickies are a great place to start. A 54 will be fine for a few months but I would save myself the trouble and get something decently sized from the start.
Also I would recommend reading some literature. There is a great book by Dr. Hans Gonella and Herbert Axelrod and another by Richard Ross. It's a good way to get a general idea of what you are getting into with keeping rays. Then from there I would say you can get your feet wet!

Just do the research. It pays off in the long run :)

thanks for the advice... i have larger tanks my 54 is the only one empty right now i figured i could keep him in there untill he got big enough to put him in my 125

:iagree:

if you have a 125 gal then put the ray directly in that

rays dont like being moved around to much and it wont be in the 55 gal long before moving him

Would a "teacup" be fine in a 180 for life?
I mean, they get big tails, so they'd be better in a 3' wide tank right?
A 9' diameter would be sufficient for a teacup or motoro, correct?
