Is a air pump absolutely necessary???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use an aquaclear 110 on my 110g and at the moment have no air pump and have been running it for quite some time and its worked fine.

Your stock and temperature make a big difference.
How many fish are breathing the oxygen? High temperatures have lower oxygen levels. If you're overstocked I'd add an air stone. Keep an eye on the fish; if you notice heavy breathing or swimming on the surface, I'd add an air stone.

My 55g is the only tank I use an air pump on because the filter only agitates the surface on one side.

dont waste your money or time on an air pump they are just more noise.
i used to have a big ol air pump rated for the size of my tank and eventually i figured out i didnt need it i unplugged and loved the silence
the bubbles dont do anything at all
the way that oxygen is put into your tank is by surface agitation aka ripples and movements in the water.
if you have a hang on the back filter it will create enough water surface agitation to keep your tank well oxygenated.
i have a 125g with no air pumps and a 10g growout and a 330g without them.
not to mention that air pumps help increase water evoporation leading to more water changes.
i reccomend you stick with your H.O.B filter because your already getting enough surface exchange of gases.
hope i helped. :headbang2

I run an air pump on the tanks that have no surface disruption. If your powerhead or filter breaks the surface tension than air pumps aren't usually necessary, unless like bottles says, you're overstocked. I haven't run a high temp tank so can't speak to that.

Hello; I have tried it both ways over a few decades. I have come to use bubblers in pretty much all tanks now.
I have had HOB filters only on tanks and have had a film develope on the water surface. There was not an oxygen issue as the tanks were well understocked but the HOB just did not aggitate the water surface enough. A small air pump with a small amount of bubbles did enough to break up the film. There is also the added insurance of having bubblers in place in the event the main filter fails for some reason. There is a current thread where a member lost some fish after a putting clay pots into a tank. He/she reported the remaining fish recovered quickly after a bubbler was added to the tank.
I have had many HOB and other power filters fail from time to time over the last 50 + years, but rarely have had a bubbler fail. Air pumps can be set up to not be so noisy.
If you tend to stock on the heavy side an air bubbler may well be a good thing to have around.

my experience is the opposite. I've never had a filter quit working. become very loud and annoying, yes. but die? never.
air pumps on the other hand... at least 4 off the top of my head.
