Is a Bichir for me?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am definitely getting a Bichir, and I will definitely be moving the gudgeons (they are my favorite fish!)

The yoyo loaches aren't very big either, and definitely very skinny (even if they are longer than 3 inches) They probably wouldn't be safe either, but it's something I'm willing to sacrifice for a poly of my own. I'm quite smitten with them.

Welcome to the poly keeping fam:grinno:
The world needs more poly keeps in it.:nilly:

Welcome to the addiction. ;)

if you're moving everything in that tank i'd get 2 sens a palmas and a rope, maybe add an african brown knife just for a bit of variety xD my 2cents

Wouldn't it be better to get two ropefish? ( I read they are the more "communal" type.)

I DO love knives, but don't think it would be a good idea to do it now. When I get to California in ~10 months, that'll be at the top of my list though!

Yoyo loaches can range from 4 to 7 inches in adult size. I've combined the senegal bichir with adult yoyos with no issues. Provided your yoyos are adults, the combo is absolutely possible with no issues. Female yoyos tend to get gravid often (although spawning is almost impossible in captivity) so with their added bulk, they're less likely to be eaten at all.

Senegal bichirs also work with angels in my experience. Never had issues with the combo.

Careful with angels and ropes though. I had to remove my angels to save the ropes. The angels kept picking at the pectoral fins whenever the ropes swam by. The ropes actually started flattening whichever pectoral fin was on the same side as the angels tight to their bodies whenever they swam by them.

Ropes would be fine since they are skinnier and not thick like other Bichirs. Your Yo-Yo Loaches would be fine if you get a Senegal. Most of the time, I don't see Sens for sale pass 4" so I'm sure you can even find small Sens to grow out with the Loaches.
