hi im looking to set up a 180g in the near future
i was leaning towards a cannister most likely eheim
which one should i go for
money not being an option at the moment (thank u kevin rudd)
or is a cannister not a good idea?

Best option for single filtration on a large tank is a wet/dry sump, provided you have the room. Personally I like to have redundant filtration on all my tanks. My 180g actually has a pair of rena xp3 cannisters for bio filtration plus a pair of AC110s which are set up just for the mechanical filtration.

Canisters are great but never rely on just one. Always have another canister, a HOB, internal filter or something to preserve beneficial bacteria if you should need to completely clean the main canister or if it ever shuts down / breaks / clogs and you are not right there to see it.

i am running my 75 off of a canister that is labeled for 150 gallon, think i will be alright?

I'm setting up a 180 in a couple weeks. I just got a Rena xp4 and put it on an established 55 to cycle. I didn't use the spraybar, just left the open end. This thing has nice flow. I'd rather have a wet/dry sump but the tank is going in my livingroom and they are too noisy. I plan on running 2 canisters and a couple HOB filters on the 180.

2 fx5's would be nice... whats your stocking the tank with?

I am running two Fx5's on a 220, they seem to do a fine job. I would go with a Fx5, they are the best out there IMO.

FX5 while you still can for 200
