is a canister my best option

Is there a reason you are not leaning towards a sump?

If you do go the canister route FX5s are great. The Eheim Pro 3s are great also if money is not a consideration. I have 2 FX5s on a 150. I'm also looking to add more filtration but my tank is heavily stocked and I'm an overfilterer. If I was doing my tank over a large sump and a FX5 for backup would be what I would have done.

Eheim 2262 and an aquaclear 110. Simple as dat!

If you want to go with a canister, and you want to do it right, go with either an eheim 2260 or 2262. There are tons of filtration options out there.

2262's arent sold in australia
so it will hae be a 2260
looks like ie made a decision

thanks everyone

yeah i understand higher flow rate in the 2262

im going to go with a 2260 and some form of internal filtration

Howdy,

I know the matter is settled, but I want to set a few things straight

Best option for single filtration on a large tank is a wet/dry sump

That is highly controversial, if not untrue. All my tanks run on canisters, and they couldn't be better thank you very much. Especially for planted tanks a sump is the worst thing you can do... there are many factors to be considered before giving such a blanket statement

Canisters are great but never rely on just one.

... except it's an Eheim :D Then one does the trick

FX5 while you still can for 200

The biofiltration of an FX is inferior to other canisters on the market. Definitely not the best option, especially if - the the OP stated - money id not an option.

The 2262 alone should be just fine.

are sumps a better option just because of the extra gallons because from what i know they basically seem like bigger canisters
