Is a LMB community possible?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Awesome! So a Largemouth community or with anyother fish would be a no-no. However, would you guys be more incline to say that other basses would be more acceptable in a small community setting?

I had a Largemouth in a 125 with 2 oscars and 2 severums, and a bluegill a looooong time ago and they got along fairly well. They were all about 3" or so when I got them and the bass chased the severums and the bluegill a little but not too bad. It paid no mind to the oscars whatsoever. I did end up releasing the bass when he got about 12" though, so it probably wasn't enough time to observe a true community, especially in a tank that small. I know releasing fish is bad, but I was in HS (15+ yrs ago) and it was a private pond......that's my excuse for that mishap lol.

Largemouth and hybrid striped "bass" aren't even closely related; Largemouth (and smallmouth, redeye anything from the genus Micropterus) are from the family Centrarchidae, the sunfish family while the striped bass are from the temperate bass family Moronidae. Largemouth and other Micropterus sp. will typically exhibit sunfish like behaviour and stake out territories and cover whereas the temperate bass are open water schooling predators - many species are migratory.

If you keep them with other native wild caught fish such as sunfish or other bass it works out fine imo. Especially since they can easily be replaced. Lmb can be really aggressive though and will need large tanks.

White bass and Yellow Bass are good schooling fish and will Hybridize, but just like what Umbra said, Most Micropterus are territorial, and you would need to have a very large tank (the size of a small pond) to have Largemouth in a community setting.

I did read something stating that. I guess what I'm looking for is the behaviors described by the temperate Moronidae family. Thanks for the clarification.

i have a lmb and a florida gar in a tank together. they are fine with each other. both of them are about a foot long so it is not because they are young. they have been together for almost a year now.
